Walking alone in the night,
It’s exhilarating isn’t it?
Feels like nothing can reach you,
You are in control; you can do what you want.
Alone in the night,
You’re not plagued by the worries of the day,
Or even by the worries of being human.
You are on top of the world,
You hold sway over all.
But then a rustle from behind the trees reaches your ears.
You stop, no longer feeling on top of the world,
No longer being in control of your own mortality.
You’re just another small little being, alone in the dark.
There’s no one to protect you,
So what are you going to do now?
Run? No, you’re too good to run.
You’re alone in the night and in control, right?
Wrong. The darkness creeps all around you,
Stealing the very breath from your chest.
The eerie night sounds are foreign to your day-sharpened hearing.
You’re suddenly very aware that you are not on top,
That you cannot claim victory over the things that go bump in the night.
While the darkness creeps ever more stealthily around you,
You stand still as stone,
Straining to hear something that you recognize,
But you don’t.
What do you do now?
Because you’re all alone in the dark.

In the end, this was never about you or me
