"I love you at a safe distance... I’ll always love you at a safe distance..."
"I love you at a safe distance... I’ll always love you at a safe distance..." "I love you at a safe distance... I’ll always love you at a safe distance..." This one is for all of my secret admirers who read me... observations... at a distance... From your IP address you sit and stare at that "dream cum true..." if only in your mind... that will do... Pre-occupied with others... easier, low hanging fruit... Leaving no trail... no crumbs to reveal your presence to others or to me... We share (often times one-way) stories with a view of a temporary stage... moving at the speed of our finger tips and/or attention span... we can say this... meant that... it matters not... as our mask protects us... so... easy it is to read... ponder... listen... move on... I might respond... I might say yes... I might... I ... what was that... metaphorically you connected with me... hello... how are you... here we are... here's a friend shake... here's a flirt happening... here's a hopeful message... all the easy forms of non-commitment communication... we love them, we do... we are safe... we cannot be hurt... we can tease... we can flirt... but, the arrows miss us completely... not even a hint of closeness... not even a scratch... Oh... how we luv to luv... from afar... sweet nothings back and forth... a theater of missed boats... late arrivals... early departures... reasons unknown... but, it's all good... 'cause we are safe... the cyber shakes... the pleasantries of hello... this is who I am... who are you... let me make a note of that... ha, ha, ha... laugh out loud... funny... and, yet... I do have time... just not now... Let me wipe my tracks... oh... what's that... never mind... I didn't mean it like that... is that what you thought... silence... pause... ... ... ... (my teases me that I am practicing Morse code on my FB page, as oftentimes I put three dots on the title for a post... she really is a comedian... I tell her that I am putting all of my life in my next stand-up routine... she says... she can't wait... I tell her "Luke I am your father..." and, btw... I brought you in to this world and taught you how to use a fork and tie your shoes... you'd be eating with your fingers and still in velcro if not for me... just sayin'...) we enjoy the opera... easier to watch than to engage... how romantic... how sensual... that was nice... this was so thoughtful... oh more time on another day... years from now we can re-create the same scene... with that lack of passion... but, the promise of more... could it be more... wait, there's someone at the door... and... so... I was inspired by these song lyrics to express the "almost encounters" I've been presented with... and, when people question me about this or that... I write with a history... when you write to tell me about something that touched you... then, I know that it affected you... when others write... I know that it affected them... I don't lose sleep over promises made from here or anywhere... but, they are made... Just thought that you should know how I feel about these lyrics... please give them a read... the song itself falls flat for me... but, the words... that's another storee... "I recall the first time you caught me dining alone At a restaurant on the third floor You sat down across from me with a bottle of wine Shook my hand and started to pour Then opened the window to the music below A theater under the stars We shared our life stories and a view of the stage Falling in love from afar Though it feels like they’ve played out The same act a million times A routine struggling just to keep From falling asleep reciting their lines You say this is the way we’re meant To enjoy the opera At a safe distance We’ve met at this table now ten years in a row To see the same opera performed Recreating the scene down to the slightest detail The night our tradition was born Attendance is low but still the show must go on The participants gossip offstage The waiter assures us that the wine is the same I guess it gets bitter with age Though it feels like we’ve played out The same act a million times A routine struggling just to keep From falling asleep reciting our lines Still it makes me happy I love you at a safe distance I’ll always love you at a safe distance…" - Color Theory - "A Safe Distance" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ...
