The Uniqueness of You

An odd thing about me is that I really love physics both Astrophysics and Quantum Mechanics. The concepts can be really hard to grasp but our Universe is so amazing it is beyond words to describe.

So if you find yourself wondering if your important, if your special, unique and worthwhile then let me share some things with you.

Are You Special?

We live in a universe that is estimated to be around 15 billion years old. Our planet is estimated to be around 4.5 billion years old. The oldest recorded micro-organisms appear about 3.5 billion years ago. While it is debated how old modern man is, it is safe to say in a time scale of 15 billion years it has only been a twinkling. In all that time, we are the privileged few to live in this amazing moment, to be here, in this place with its abundance of life and beauty. And not only that, but we were born in just the right time to have a chance to communicate in ways that didn't seem possible even 20 years ago. That your are even able to be here to read these words is nothing short of a miracle.

How big is the universe?

The universe is so big that to describe it's size we must use numbers so big that they lose all meaning. Let me describe it like this. Light travels at about 187,000 miles per second. If you left earth at this amazing speed then it would take you One Hundred Thousand Years just to cross our own Milky Way Galaxy. It would take another 78 billion years to cross the known universe. Hard to fathom I know. Imagine this, if the earth itself was the size of the period at the end of this sentence, then the sun would be about the size of your computer screen. If the earth was the size of a period ( . ) then the largest known star ( VV Cephei ) would be the size of your house. That is only the size of 1 star. If that one star was shrunk down to the size of a period ( . ) then our galaxy would be the size of the city you live in, and the Universe has billions upon billions of galaxies. And, of all the places in that immeasurable vastness that your molecules could have been, you were in just the right place at just the right time to be born on this planet that is teeming with just the right ingredients to support life.

What are we made of?

Look at your self in the mirror. No matter what you think of whatever minor imperfections you see think about this. You are literally made from Stars. The atoms that combine to form the molecules of everything you see, or have ever seen, or ever will see came from stars. Only the nuclear reactions within stars and from the explosions of stars could be responsible for forcing the atoms together to form heavy molecules. So at some point eons upon eons ago the very molecules of your heart and mind helped fuel a sun perhaps even as far away as a distant galaxy. Everything that makes your body has traveled incalculable distances in both time and space just to be here and be part of you.

All the events that lead up to you simply being you is breathtaking. The odds of you simply being formed is on the order of you winning the state lottery... of every state... on every day... for the next million years.

YOU ARE SPECIAL
YOU ARE UNIQUE
YOU ARE WORTHWHILE
YOU ARE AMAZING
YOU ARE PHENOMENAL

To put it simply

YOU ARE A MIRACLE. and I am so amazingly, incredibly, blessed just to know you.

All the best,
1Lost
