Alas, many Americans are unaware that "ass" in UK usage can mean folt, dolt, clown. Had your interlocutor said "Wow, what an arse!" it would perhaps have been more evidently a compliment, but then again calling somebody an arse has pretty much the same meaning as ass! Wow, what a lovely psoterior you have! may be clearer, but it isn't nearly as snappy!

Well it is a lovely ass. One thing I learned in life is how you say something makes such a difference. Now if you heard it in person it may well have sounded like a good thing but an adjective would certainly clarify the meaning. If you see me in the real world, come say "Hi Justskin." I always behave. Preferably not well.
